Overview:
The Production Manager is a critical leadership role in the dairy processing sector, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the production process. This individual ensures that production targets are met efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of product quality, safety, and compliance. The Production Manager works collaboratively across departments to optimize operations, drive innovation, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
This role requires strong technical expertise in dairy production, exceptional leadership abilities, and a deep understanding of regulatory and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production Leadership and Planning
- Develop and execute daily, weekly, and long-term production plans aligned with business objectives and customer demand.
- Monitor production lines to ensure consistent workflow, minimal downtime, and efficient use of resources.
- Manage production schedules to optimize throughput while minimizing waste.
- Analyse operational data to forecast production needs and adjust accordingly.
2. Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Ensure that all products meet or exceed quality standards, including taste, texture, and packaging requirements.
- Work closely with the Quality Assurance (QA) team to develop and enforce rigorous quality control protocols.
- Stay informed of regulatory changes (e.g., FDA, USDA, FSMA) and implement necessary updates to processes and documentation.
- Conduct regular audits of production processes to identify and address potential risks.
3. Team Management and Development
- Recruit, train, and develop production team members, fostering a culture of accountability and high performance.
- Set clear goals and expectations for staff and provide regular feedback through performance evaluations.
- Manage scheduling, staffing levels, and workforce planning to meet production demands.
- Promote a positive, collaborative workplace culture with a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork.
4. Operational Efficiency and Continuous Improvement
- Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements to increase production output and reduce costs.
- Utilize Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, machinery, and methods to stay competitive in the dairy industry.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and create action plans to address underperformance.
5. Safety and Maintenance Oversight
- Ensure adherence to workplace safety standards and conduct regular safety training for staff.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure equipment is serviced, inspected, and functioning at peak efficiency.
- Develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedules to minimize unplanned downtime
6. Budget and Inventory Management
- Manage production budgets, monitor costs, and identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality.
- Oversee inventory management, including raw materials, packaging supplies, and finished goods.
- Coordinate with the procurement team to ensure timely delivery of materials while maintaining optimal inventory levels.
7. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Sales, Supply Chain, and Distribution teams to align production with market demand.
- Partner with Research & Development (R&D) on new product launches, ensuring smooth scale-up from pilot to full production.
- Provide input on strategic planning and operational goals to senior management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science, Food Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in production management, preferably within the dairy or food processing industry.
- In-depth knowledge of dairy manufacturing processes, including pasteurization, fermentation, homogenization, and packaging.
- Familiarity with industry certifications and programs (e.g., HACCP, GMP, SQF).
- Proficient in production management software and tools, such as ERP systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams in a high-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Preferred Skills and Attributes
- Expertise in continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification).
- Experience in automation and modern dairy production technologies.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and drive data-informed decisions.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective team leadership and stakeholder collaboration.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work in cold, wet, and high-noise environments for extended periods.
